From your brand’s personality to your product, some people will hate you and some will love you. You will have those hanging in the middle, but generally you will have the two sides.

You came up with an idea or you have one established, now you are getting all the hate and love mail. Your product or service isn’t for everyone. Just like certain celebrities might not gear towards everyone, you have a following and they love you.

With social media, you focus on the followers that love your product or idea and you will have more of the inbetweeners that might follow suit. Keeping your ears and eyes open on the things that people love about you, will help you keep what they love and improve on those aspects. If you can include any of the people sitting on the fence or the ones that might not like it at all, then why not, but keeping your strong group of followers is the most important part.

Hearing the phrase “We are not for everyone” makes sense. You might judge people who use that phrase with their business, but when you think about it, it makes sense. A luxury retailer gears towards a specific clientele, but it doesn’t mean that people outside of their target range won’t buy their product. We all have personalities and we usually connect with brands that fit our personalities, but even personalities aren’t one-sided. I might not spend a lot on retail, but I like to splurge on holidays. The luxury holiday market really suits me, even though the retail might now.

So, just like people, brands are the same way. They might not be a cookie-cutter imitation of a person’s personality, but nonetheless, we connect with others that have one thing in common with us, not all things in common.

The main thing a brand can do is keep on attracting the people that they do using their brand personality, with a hint of open-mindedness to other people. You won’t change for everyone, but you will include others in your group. Loyal customers are your important customers. One store owner said to me “We haven’t had a drop in sales, nor have we had a rise in sales. We have our loyal customers and they keep coming back to us”. A business can rely on their loyal customers and anything else that comes their way, they can take it as a bonus. Brands just like people will evolve and change a bit, but keeping their loyal customers in mind, they shouldn’t push them away.

Where you have a loyal customer following, your next step is to gain a larger group of that loyal following, if it isn’t already growing through word-of-mouth. That is where experienced branding professionals and social media consultants come into play. By doing the old John meet Sally and Sally meet John, but a lot more work involved, they can bring more of those customers that might fit your brands personality, even if they might like luxury travel, but not luxury retail clothing. After all, we are not for everyone!

It’s Hard Work Looking for Who to Follow

Looking for people to follow on Twitter can take a lot of time. If you are anything like me, you are probably very strategic in finding who you want to follow. This takes time! You want someone who is sharing information that you find valuable or interesting, they might enjoy or have similar interests, but they might just be funny and their tweets make you laugh. Sometimes you follow people online just to get some good updated information or for a laugh, so you don’t really feel like you need to or want to connect with them.

Parodies are Online As Well

Have you seen some of the parody accounts on Twitter? There are a few of them, but here is one. Elizabeth Windsor A parody of the Queen, that really is all about reading the posts and sharing them. I’ve never seen someone tweeted back at or followed, but that is just that, a parody. You read it, you either enjoy it or don’t and you follow it.

Great Opportunities Should Push You to Connect

Moving away from parody accounts, we have others that we look for strategically to connect with for whatever reason, but being humans, we usually follow and don’t always interact as we should. Well, that is just lost opportunities. Interacting on Twitter, people have created new friendships, found jobs and found some great business partners. Have you ever connected with someone that you respect and they connected right back with you? I have. It’s great. I connected with authors of books that I was reading, I got to share comments with them, I connected with people working at companies that I would once want to work at and I’ve connected with people that I just generally respect.

Being Shy Won’t Help You

Even though we are on social media, there is one human instinct that most can’t control and that is being shy. We feel shy and not only shy, but we feel that we don’t want to put ourselves out there. Let me tell you one thing. If you are not putting yourselves out there in the online world to connect with someone that you want to, you are just missing out on opportunities. Just like applying for a job, we sometimes don’t want to send in our resume or CV for fear of being rejected. The same thing goes for almost anything else that we do.

Just Connect and See What Happens

We aren’t as visible on social media as we might think, so just like finding a job, you won’t get it, unless you express your interest. The point of this post isn’t to teach you a lesson, show you how to connect with someone on Twitter or give out tips on how to increasing your Twitter followers; I am sure that you already know all those. The point of it is to remind you of something you might be doing without putting much thought into it.

Wait For the Cheesy Ending

Don’t worry about the reaction that you might get when trying to connect with a friendly tweet to someone, just think about the reaction that you might not get if you don’t actively engage with that person. Who knows, there might be a great job waiting for you, a long-lasting business partnership or the best and cheesiest of them all, a friend.

The British pound has fallen again and the UK has been stripped of its AAA debt rating, yet we can’t always look negatively. Business owners who are trying to get their businesses to swim instead of sink are the ones that are really trying to make it work. While some will simply accept it as it is, some are looking at it another way.

The British Pound has fallen compared to other currencies, but what does that mean internationally and how can we gain when the pound has fallen? Generally, services and products that are sold in the UK will be cheaper. I remember a time when the pound was very low, compared to the Euro, living in France at that moment, going to the British capital for a short break was a popular choice. You would come back with laptops and clothes, yet still be able to have a great time away from home.

How a business takes charge of this situation is their choice, but there are definitely some positives in this, not to mention opportunities.

1) Your Offering: The product is still the same product and the price is most likely, the same. Depending on where you bring your products in from, this might have an effect on your costs. Generally speaking, your product is now more affordable for your international customers. If you offer a service, your service’s costs usually won’t be affected much by cost. You now offer a more competitive service to various customers in countries that have a higher rate of currency compared to the pound.

2) Innovation: During hard times, a lot of innovation starts. People innovate to become more competitive. It is the “sink or swim” idea, but most businesses choose to swim, rather than sink. Businesses tend to grow their client base through innovation and customers who generally wouldn’t have a use for the product or service, now do.

3) Quality: Making sure that your quality of work stays top-notch. You might think that this only applies to the service industry, but think again. Great customer service is in all industries. Small business owners tend to be especially frustrated at times when the economy changes. Change generally equals stress because we might not be ready for it. Nonetheless, making sure that the quality of your products stays the same, if not better, but just as important, that your customer service is top-notch.

Staying competitive is key and keeping a positive outlook is obviously important here. Ensure that your customers get the best service from you and don’t be afraid to expand and venture out. Working with social media, it isn’t too hard to expand internationally or acquire new customers.

If you would like to add any ideas or comments to help out readers out there who are going through the same, please do. I am sure they will appreciate your input.

“25.5% of the votes and a great online presence”

Giuseppe Piero Grillo, better known as Beppe Grillo is an Italian politician that founded the Five Star Movement political party. Beppe (pronounced “behpeh”) Grillo is known very well for his comedy, he founded the Five Star Movement at the end of 2009. A party that was founded just over 3 years ago, won 25.5% of votes in the 2013 general election in Italy. The success rate of a new political party to rise up within such a short time span is surprising, but whether Beppe Grillo did it intentionally or simply expressed his views online, online media was his biggest tool. Don’t be fooled by the politician title, there is a lot to be learned from him.

Online Media

Blog: Beppe constantly updates his online blog, which is written in Italian, English and Japanese. Having a live blog since October 2005 in English and January 2005 in Italian, his site has an Alexa Traffic Rank of 4,291 and 92 in Italy. His Italian blog being a more developed blog, for obvious reasons, features videos and event dates leading people to not just read the blog, but participate as well.

Criticism: Constructive criticism paves a path to improve and it isn’t something to be scared of. With criticism can come change and of course, we can always make something better and improve on it. For me criticism is a gold mine of ideas on how I can better improve something, of course, as long as it is constructive. People looking for improvement will also attach themselves to that, as they see the person as a catalyst for change and improvement.

The way that Beppe Grillo utilizes all that the online world has to offer isn’t anything new or revolutionary. It is simply a great reminder of what we are doing all along to reach our personal, business or whatever type of goals you have and the potential that there is in the online world for the people that aren’t utilizing it. With the right plan and strategy, as well as some help, that personal or business goal isn’t too far ahead.

The situation in Europe is a tough one and people are always looking for ways to keep their businesses from going down. The current Italian election uncertainty hasn't had a positive effect in Europe and even the world. European markets have fallen due to the recent deadlock in the Italian elections. All the votes were counted, yet there wasn't a majority that won and the fear of a split parliament making the situation harder in Italy might trigger uncertainty in other parts of Europe.
The economic situation is quite volatile with one event that can trigger negative or positive changes very quickly. The situation in Europe is a tough one and people are always looking for ways to keep their businesses from going down. The current Italian election uncertainty hasn’t had a positive effect in Europe and even the world. European markets have fallen due to the recent deadlock in the Italian elections. All the votes were counted, yet there wasn’t a majority that won and the fear of a split parliament making the situation harder in Italy might trigger uncertainty in other parts of Europe. The effect of Italy could be great on the Eurozone, with Italy being the third-largest economy in the Eurozone after Germany and France. This could specifically disrupt the efforts being made in Spain and France to take control of their own economy and stop the downward spiral.

Looking at the general situation in Europe, I see a great need for businesses to look further away to create business for themselves. Businesses before were able to survive the tough times that might generate trouble for them and some were even able to make a large profit during these times. The old saying “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” couldn’t be more true. Whether that means to innovate and find further uses for their products and services or to look further abroad to find untapped or growing markets. Change what you can and work with what you can’t!

Improve: Find new ways to improve your products. Go online and see what people are saying about you, whether you find that on your Facebook page, your Twitter account or generally looking overall to find out what articles have been written about your products. Look further for products or services similar to your own. Find out what is being said there. With all this great information, you can compile a list of any changes that need to be made or could be made to make you stand out. Whether that means, lowering your costs to lower the price of the product or service or adjusting the product or service to fill a few needs that your customers or clients might have.

Internationalize: Go abroad. Look at markets that have been untapped or where there is a low supply of what you offer. Take a look at economic factors because you probably don’t need any more uncertainty in your business life and don’t be afraid to connect with others online, so that you can find out if what you offer, will have use in the new market. Generally the answer is yes, but during times of uncertainty, you don’t want to be too rash in your decision. It is never a problem to test out the waters first, before you jump in. For more information about going international please read How to Increase Business without Breaking the Bank and Social Media after International Expansion.

Whatever the case may be, it is important to be able to stay afloat during these times.

The online world has provided us with the ability to do just that. We can work internationally, sell internationally and showcase our business internationally. For business owners, managers, CEOs and various organization leaders, it is important to be able to diversify themselves, yet at the same time not spread themselves too thin. What you can’t do yourself, get someone to help you. It is never wrong to get help and everybody has needed it at one point in their life.

The economic situation is quite volatile with one event that can trigger negative or positive changes very quickly. The situation in Europe is a tough one and people are always looking for ways to keep their businesses from going down. The effect of Italy could be great on the Eurozone, with Italy being the third-largest economy in the Eurozone after Germany and France. This could specifically disrupt the efforts being made in Spain and France to take control of their own economy and stop the downward spiral.

Flickr: ntr23

So what happens after you expand internationally. You went after a designated language group, culture or country and now you need to work further on your already established international expansion. Here are a few more things that you can do.

Provide multilingual customer service: Once you are selling products or services, your customers need their customer support and depending on where you expanded, it most likely won’t be in your own language. Customer service and supporting your customers is a very important part of it. It shows that you care about your customers and that you are ready to provide first-class service. If there are any problems with your products or services, this allows your customer to voice their problem or opinions in regards to your product. Having a source for that will allow you and your customers resolve any problems that might arise, immediately. This can be done with Twitter and monitored throughout the day. Real-time problems with a real-time social media network, you save yourself money from hiring a full-time customer service representative and they save money from making international calls to resolve a problem with an order or a question in regards to your service.

Do some market research: Performing marketing research on your client base in your newly acquired market will make it possible to see how the market has accepted your service or your products. Market research isn’t just to find out what the client base thought or thinks of your products, but also a way of making changes for improvement. When performing market research, make sure that you have collected a list of customers that you can contact to ask them about their experience of using your product or service. It is vital that you have questions already setup and making them easy enough to answer without complications for the customer. Looking at it from your side, you have to make sure that these answers can be clear to you and can be placed on a database with other answers. To implement that, you can use answers that can be traced on a number scale, so if you ask them a question on how satisfied they were, you can include 1 for “not at all satisfied” or 5 for completely satisfied. Keeping your answers along the lines of this number, you can create graphs, charts and shape the data into a medium that everyone can view on a large scale or on a per interviewee scale. These polls can be done over the phone, which helps you get an immediate answer and you will have more surveys answered. If you want the same effect online, make sure that there is some positives for your current customer, other than the promise that you will use the information to improve your product. Prizes and quick polls on Facebook can help with this. For more on market research, please visit this blog and we will have some great resources for you to use, including where and how you can create online surveys, as well as great offline telephone surveys.

Now that you have done all the steps, you can choose if you want to further expand into your new market or not. The recent data that you acquired and your experience with the new market, your decision might not be so tough. Nonetheless, congratulations on expanding and venturing out for the success of your business.

Increasing business is important for expansion, but when we run a business in a country that is experiencing a slump or a recession, looking abroad is promising. Running a business can be your livelihood and if you are only trading locally, the local economy might be the biggest factor to your success or failure. You feel that there is nothing that you can do about it, but there is. Looking internationally and seeing the opportunities that are available there can be the aspect that separates you from growth and slump. One great way to try out your products or services abroad, before you invest more time and money there, is to try it out online." src="http://sociallylostinmedia.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/the-world-is-in-your-hands.jpg?w=470&h=470" width="470" height="470" />
Flickr: laynasaur

Increasing business is important for expansion, but when we run a business in a country that is experiencing a slump or a recession, looking abroad is promising. Running a business can be your livelihood and if you are only trading locally, the local economy might be the biggest factor to your success or failure.

You feel that there is nothing that you can do about it, but there is. Looking internationally and seeing the opportunities that are available there can be the aspect that separates you from growth and slump. One great way to try out your products or services abroad, before you invest more time and money there, is to try it out online.

Setup shop online: Make sure that you have a website online; This is the foundation and a vital aspect to being online. Having a website is a must. We now take this website and translate it. Make sure that you do not translate it using online translation software because there are often large errors in online translation, which makes your website look sloppy. Most foreign customers will not trust you if your website has grammar and spelling mistakes in their language. You can either get a professional translator to translate your website and change it around to suit the local language, culturally and idiomatically. After that you can have it implemented online by finding someone to input the new multilingual parts of the website. A great way to save money and skip using two different professionals is to instantly find a or web designer fluent in the language that you speak and the market that you wish to tap.

Implement social media: Implementing social media in a foreign language is important. No, you don’t need to hire someone full time, but you might need some help if you do not speak the language. For the purpose of others being able to find you online this is important. So for example, if you are selling cakes and you wish to sell cakes to German-speaking customers, that you use “Kuchen” and not cakes. Think about it the other way around, would you ever be able to find or see results online if someone constantly wrote Kuchen instead of cakes. You would never find them.

Implement online marketing: Online marketing specifically targeted to an area or a language group is the way to go. When you create online ads, it is important to have a target audience and properly create ads to be placed on key locations for your customers to see. If we are looking at content marketing, then we need to make sure that we have engaging content in the language of your newly targeted customer base without forgetting about the cultural aspects of it.

Take your time with your trial expansion and you might have to work on it longer than you think. Along the way, you can get help in the tasks that you yourself can’t complete. Stick to your goals and you don’t have to break the bank. For more information on increasing your business profits internationally, visit this blog soon for more posts.

I am sure many of you have felt like that at one point or another. The relationship gets rocky and social media isn’t pulling its weight around the house, I mean social sphere. I all honesty, you’ve been trying so hard to make it work, for social media to help improve your brand’s awareness online, but you are just not getting the attention you deserve.

Now, let’s ask “What are you doing for social media?” Well, what are you? With social media, you have to give effort. Okay, so you believe you did and maybe you did. In all honesty, you don’t give up on your first try. It’s the first time that you get on that bike, you try to pedal and you fall. Until you get up again and try some more. Starting out with social media isn’t easy, as easy as it might look at the beginning, but you almost feel like you are in a big room full of people and you don’t know how to stand out or grab their attention. Stand out and grab their attention are the key words.

This is where creativity comes into play. Sit down, have a cup of tea and listen to your creative/relaxing music. If your creative music is rock, well then listen to that. This is the point where you have to devise a plan because working on social media without a goal in mind, well you have no path that you want to go. If you want to just socialize then socialize, but if you want to meet the right people, gain the right clients and engage them, then there is a bit more work to do.

One thing I remember when I was young was that, when playing as a child, I did want some attention to be on me, but indirectly. I would always be the one to devise a game, an egg hunt with a blind fold or some kind of ridiculous game making it challenging, yet fun. Do you see where I am going with this? With social media you have to make it fun. Twitter has provided you with the tools, now you have to devise that plan, create that entertainment and let go a bit. With that said, you can join in the fun and eventually pat yourself on the back for creating engagement online for your brand.

A few things to remember:

Don’t give up. Instead, try again

Create a fun activity/game

Record results on your efforts

Improve and do it again

Try to leave some time in between, before you do it again. We all get worn out even when we are having. Now that you have this in mind, stay tuned for some more specific and descriptive posts on creating engagement online using social media.

Finding affordable ways to get help from a social media professional can be difficult depending on what your idea of affordable is or what your budget is. The good thing with social media is that there are some tasks that can be broken up and you can definitely find some affordable help.

1) Save the social media professional time and you will lower your costs

If a social media professional needs less time to work on your social media, that will certainly lower the costs. There are some things that you yourself can do that will allow your social media professional to free up their time and in turn will charge you less. Remember that this won’t only lower the cost, but also create efficiency in the whole system. Ask your social media professional what they will do for your social media accounts and see if you can do some of it yourself. Let’s say that they will be searching for people to connect with. Why not follow those people yourself and let them interact with them online or vice versa. This will bring you one step closer to affordable social media help.

2) Set yourself up on the accounts and let them do the rest

If you set yourself up online, create your own account and maybe you have a knack for photoshop, then create your own Twitter background. Sign up for the accounts yourself, create your own Facebook page, put in the information and once your social media hired help likes your page, you can make them the admin. This way everything will be set up and with a few of their tweaks they can get started on it immediately.

3) You know what to write, you just don’t know how to write it

Sending out Tweets or Facebook posts, you could be making a few mistakes when you send them out to the public. Although you know what you want to post or what you want to Tweet. No problem! Send a few small sentences or a paragraph that your social media professional can check over and simply summarize or fit it into what needs to be posted or tweeted. This will safe them the time that they need to figure it out themselves and it will look professional as well.

4) You don’t know how to use social media, but you learn fast

You might not be the best at social media, but you can learn things quickly. Get them to help you out and spend time explaining things to you. If you are both far apart from each other and they need to show you something online, not a problem there are great programs for that. You can use Google for your video and if you need them to temporarily take control of your computer and actually show you what to do, then that isn’t a problem at all. That is why you have teamviewer. These small applications and social networking platforms can reduce the need for you to actually meet in person.

5) You know how to manage your own social media, but you need research

The idea behind this is that, you know how to manage your social media, but you need the analytics part done, maybe some online market research. Manage your own social media and have them do the research. They can go online analyse everything for you, research new potential clients, see what is missing in your own social media, find out what your competitors are doing and finally give you a proper report on how you can become more competitive online and offline with your product or service.

With all these possibilities of what you can do with your social media manager, you can finally be able to find some affordable social media help. This won’t break your budget because you can alter it to fit your budget and still get professional help. Find some great consultants, maybe some of them who are knowledgeable and experienced, but are freelancing. Some older agencies may cost more, but do a bit of price shopping to find out what they charge and if they would charge you per hour or per project. See what they come up with and choose what makes you and your wallet feel at ease.

Most businesses are set up on Facebook, many on Twitter and still quite a few on Pinterest. You might find businesses as well on Google+ and other social media platforms. Usually what businesses tend to forget or avoid is blogging. They avoid it because it takes time as all things do, but blogging just seems of less interest to some.

Speaking to a client, I noticed that they had a Twitter account and a Facebook page, they were really interested in getting started on Twitter and Facebook, but they completely forgot about their blog button that lead to nowhere on their website. The products that they were selling were definitely something of great interest to a lot of people, it was new and innovative, yet no blog. For a situation like this it is great to have a blog because this is a way of reaching out to your potential customers and introducing them on the many uses and benefits of your product. I obviously suggested that more attention should be spent working on the “blog button to nowhere” and named some benefits. Let’s just take a look at two that everyone knows.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO

Blogging can help bring the ranking of your site way up. Blog about something useful, something that people will enjoy reading or find helpful. With that said there are a few tips and tricks everyone can use to make sure that their blogs aren’t left in the dark. Writing proper titles, creating links to your products and using keywords will definitely set you apart from others. This takes time, but in the long run, it will be worth it because your blog is a reward that you will slowly reap.

Interaction and Connection

With blogs you can share your stories, let’s say, about the products that you offer and how they are made. You are able to describe a product in detail and with that you might get some great comments. Negative and positive comments are great and you might be able to get some information on your product from. Think of it almost as a survey that you didn’t even have to ask them to do, but a nice “We would love to hear from you” or a “Your comments are always appreciated” might help to lighten the mood and start the comments. Once one person comments, the next person will feel more willing to comment as well. Imagine it like children in a classroom. When the teacher asks “Does anyone have any questions?” you might not get anybody lifting up their hands, but when someone already does lift up their hand, you might even get a few more after that. Those comments are vital to your business because these are your customers. Now you take those comments to improve your products and respond to them in a normal fashion bringing the interaction with your customers way up. It’s great, isn’t it?!

Now this post wasn’t written for tips to blogging, but to make you think about implementing it, if you already haven’t. It is definitely something to give a thought to. There are many tips and tricks you can learn on blogging, so stay tuned to this blog and more information will be coming your way.
